Reading and Phonics
At St Joseph's we strive to nurture a love of reading in order to develop confident and enthusiastic readers who can understand a wide range of texts for information and pleasure.
Teachers develop pupils’ reading in all subjects to support their acquisition of knowledge. Pupils are taught to read fluently using Phonics, understand extended prose (both fiction and non-fiction) and are encouraged to read for pleasure. A love of reading and reading extensively for pleasure is promoted as a school.
